SEMI, the industry association serving the global electronics design and manufacturing supply chain, applauded the European Commission’s unveiling of the European Water Resilience Strategy as a positive and fundamental step to enhance water efficiency, resilience and sustainability across Europe.
The European Commission initially announced the strategy in the 2024 Commission Work Programme in response to the growing water shortages and severe droughts experienced in recent years. The strategy seeks to provide a non-legislative roadmap to identify potential measures that can ensure a sustainable and secure water supply to Europe’s citizens and environmental and industrial ecosystems, with a strong focus on implementing a circular approach to water management practices.
“The semiconductor industry’s efforts to reduce water consumption and implement sustainable practices are increasingly vital in the face of growing environmental concerns and water scarcity,” said Laith Altimime, President of SEMI Europe. “By continuing to innovate in water management technologies and optimizing water use across production processes, the semiconductor industry remains strongly committed to achieve significant reductions in water consumption, thereby contributing to global sustainability efforts.”
On behalf of its member companies, SEMI Europe has submitted its official response to the European Commission’s stakeholder consultation on the Water Resilience Strategy, highlighting the strategic importance of water across the semiconductor sector and showcasing the ongoing industry efforts to implement sustainable water management practices.
SEMI Europe will continue to engage with relevant policymakers and stakeholders to create a legislative framework that can enhance sustainability across the European semiconductor supply chain while preserving technological competitiveness.
