Brazil currently has the most confirmed COVID-19 cases in South America. Already in March, hospital capacities for intensive medical care of corona patients were expanded, and several field hospitals were established.
In Brazil, Busch Vacuum Solutions works closely together with a customer that builds and installs medical gas supply systems. Busch has developed a series of vacuum supply systems for hospitals especially for this customer. Shortly before the outbreak of the Corona pandemic, Busch received an innovation award for this product from the customer. The necessity of such vacuum systems became apparent only days later: Due to the spreading pandemic, Busch’s storage and production capacity in Brazil was expanded in order to be able to deliver as quickly as possible. Busch was thus able to deliver the needed vacuum systems in time for the completion of the field hospitals and the expansion of the intensive care units in hospitals.
The largest field hospital was built in the Pacaembu Stadium in Sao Paulo for 2,800 patients. The stadium, which hosted matches for the 1950 World Cup and the 1963 Pan American Games, has been in operation as a field hospital since mid-April. Four other field hospitals in Brazil are now also equipped with gas and vacuum supply systems and take care of corona patients.
